'Squiggling' explores the implications for talking cure psychoanalysis of insights from the visual arts, specifically (a) Impressionism as developed by the psychoanalyst, Wilfred Bion, (b) Post-Impressionism as developed by the phenomenologist, Merleau-Ponty, and (c) Surrealism as developed in terms of psychic automatism and paranoia-criticism by Andre Breton and Salvador Dali respectively. 'Squiggling' brings these insights together in terms of the squiggle game in which players take turns completing each other's personal and idiosyncratic doodles or squiggles into interpretative meaning.

After studying art and psychology at Dartington Hall School and Cambridge University, respectively, I qualified as a clinical psychologist at London's Tavistock Clinic, and as a psychotherapist at London's British Association of Psychotherapists. I am now Professor of Psychoanalytic Psychology at the University of Kent in Canterbury, where I also work for the NHS and privately as a psychotherapist. My proposed talk is based on my recent return to drawing and painting, on my long experience of teaching and writing, and on research into the visual arts for KLEINIANS (Polity 2000), DIVINE THERAPY (Oxford University Press 2003), and for the book on which I am currently working, provisionally called SQUIGGLING: ART & PSYCHOANALYSIS
