The Effect of Art and Design as a High School Subject on the Academic Development of Graphic Design Students

The purpose of this study was to determine whether tertiary graphic design students who had Art and Design as a school subject have an advantage over those who did not. The derived objectives are: to assess the importance of Art and Design as a school subject; to determine the effect that acquisition of wrong methods at primary- and secondary level has on tertiary students; to establish the importance of qualified art teachers; and to determine the influence of the type of design education at secondary level on tertiary level.
The most important finding was that there was no difference between the marks of tertiary students who had Art and Design at secondary level and those who did not.
The conclusions that can be drawn from this is that design education presented at secondary level does not benefit students in graphic design at tertiary level.

A Degree in Graphic Design at the Vaal Traingle Technikon become the foundation of my consequent endeavours. I acquired the post as Graphic Designer at Tshwane University of Technology, which refine my competence as designer, encouraging the need to start my own Graphic Design company. During the same time I was employed as lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology, which I am holding now. Lecturing consists of an assortment of exhilarating tasks. Subjects that I teach include Communication Design II & III, Professional Practice II and Computers II for Graphic Design students; Presentation Drawing II and Presentation Methods for Interior Design students; and Visualisation Techniques II for Multimedia Design students. BTech and MTech students also have me as their student advisor. I am very much an artist at heart and a DIY enthusiast, making mosaic, sculpting, painting, and doing fine arts, thus decorating the homes of those whom it pleases, and my own. At a more physical level, I do ice-skating and enjoy attending aerobics classes.
