Heuristic Rhetorical Models: Artistic Creativity, Artistic Analysis, and Arts of Engagement
A Rhetorical Model of Communication can serve as a heuristic tool for examining artistic creativity, artistic analysis, and the categories providing the focus for this conference, Arts of Engagement. The Rhetorical Process Model of Communication builds on a systems model, but divides the human communication process into objective and subjective dimensions. The central pcocess onf the model focuses on the subjective purpose and the objective method within communication. The model has previosuly provided an heuristic for examining the processes involved in leadership, management, teamwork, mentoring, and education. This paper will adapt the model as an heuristic to anlayze the process of Artistic Creativity, by focusing on the individual artist. It then examines the aesthetic process of artistic criticism, form the viewpoint of outside observers, including professional critics, the viewing public, and art foundations. Finally the categories of the model itself seem to provide an integrative way to classify the various streams used in this conference on Arts of Engagement.
