The Importance of Art Within Healthcare Settings

The arts play an important role in making healing environments feel more comfortable to patients in often times stressful surroundings. Ms. Glassford will share stories, opportunities and examples of using the arts which have facilitated healing for individual patients and the community at large. Examples will be drawn from the genesis of major sculpture commissions inspired by hope to theraputic endeavors shown as temporary art exhibitions. Also discussed will be how to find or commission art work that is appropiate for public areas and patient rooms.

Donna Glassford

Director, Cultural Enrichment, Vanderbilt Universtiy Medical Center

As the Director of Cultural Enrichement at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Donna Glassford oversees a department responsible for the visual and performing arts for a medical center that provides care for over 700,000 pateints a year. Programs include changing exhibition spaces, theraputic art and music programs and education classes. Glassford works with architects and designers to insure that art is incorporated into the architure in new construction and renovations. VUMC opened a freestanding children's hospital in 2003 which is reknown for the use of art throughout the facility. She is also the curator to the medical center's sizable art collection and public art program which includes work created by Frank Stella, Maurice Blik, Guy Dill, Bernar Venet, Fletcher Benton and many more. Glassford has served as an arts commissioner for the city of Nashville. As a member of the city's public art committee she co-wrote the city's "percent for art" policy and served as a free lance art consultant for the Nashville Public Library. Glassford recently stepped down as an executive board member for the Society for Arts in Healthcare, a national arts organization dedicated to promoting the arts in healthcare. She is also a painter and sculptor.
