This communication, based on an analysis of landscape interventions by four Brazilian artsits, Flávia Fernandes, Giacomo Picca, Irineu Garcia and José Guedes, discusses the broadening and intermarriage of traditional concepts about landscape in Western art. By analyzing the constructive and conceptual processes of these interventions using images and statements by the artists, it strives to highlight the new relations of artists with landscape, new forms of dialog with territories and new practices of art. The idea of territory as a factor in individual equilibrium and in identity with places, presupposes relations with the landscape considered as identifiers of the simultaneous process of territorial identity and deterritorialization caused by globalization. Landscape is seen as a form of recovery of the poetic possibilities of the relation of the individual to his or her surroundings and no longer as a theme or genre. The change in the relation of artists with the landscape shifts from that of contemplation at a distance to actions of intervention, establishing new roles in the interaction between artist and public.

The interventions in the landscape operate at the limit of the artist’s field, placing the artist in a circumstance of challenge and subversion, invading spaces, modifying codes of dialog, questioning art as social practice and infringing on established norms. This communication includes an analysis of how, upon leaving the closed spaces of museums and galleries, the artist alters his work processes. What new relations are established between artist-public-artwork? How are expanded territories of art established in this search for new spaces?

This re-evaluates the limits of the practice of art and its field of operation and at the same time reaffirms art as a symbolic form capable of creating meanings.
